Speaking, Training, Facilitation

Real talk for people in their time of need.

PA Speaker 24 speaks from lived experience — including his own experience of trauma — and leaves people with practical tools they can use at work, at home, and in the community. Over nine years of speaking, training, and peer work in Portland and beyond.

01 — Lived experience

He has been there.

PA Speaker 24 talks openly about trauma and lived experience. PA Speaker 24 came through reentry himself — through transitional housing, peer programs, and back to work — and volunteered in the recovery community while working as a union carpenter. He now trains the people and programs walking that same road.

02 — Practical tools

People leave with something.

Every session is built around discussion, a feedback form, and a feedback survey — not just a talk. Job-seeking steps, interview skills, and tools for balance and resilience.

03 — Trauma-informed

Safety first, always.

PA Speaker 24 holds a Trauma-Informed Certificate for Coaches and trains with care for the room: what is shared, what stays private, and how people are treated.

About PA Speaker 24

Patrick Alexander

Patrick Alexander is a speaker, trainer, and peer worker in Portland, Oregon, serving recovery resources and community engagement audiences — people in recovery, people returning from incarceration, workforce programs, and the staff who support them.

Before speaking, Patrick worked as a union carpenter — volunteering in the recovery community while he did that work — and later as a recruiter and trainer at Central City Concern, where he had once been a client of the Flip the Script reentry program and lived in transitional housing. He knows both sides of the desk — and he speaks to both.

He served more than four years on the Portland Police Bureau’s Training Advisory Council, two of them as chair, and now serves on the boards of WeShine PDX and the Partnership for Safety & Justice. He is also Associate Pastor at Light My Way Church.

Understanding My Language

Do we all speak the same language? This session looks at culture, identity, and finances — and at the cost of assumptions — through honest conversation and shared exercises.

  • CultureWhat we carry, and what we assume about each other.
  • IdentityWho we are, and who we are becoming.
  • FinancesMoney, language, and the choices underneath both.

Conversation that de-escalates

Nonviolent Conversation

How we talk when it matters most. Nonviolent Conversation gives people language for hard moments — at work, at home, and in community — so conflict becomes conversation instead of harm.

  • Listen firstUnderstanding before responding.
  • Speak plainlySaying what is needed, without blame.
  • Stay in the roomKeeping the conversation going when it gets hard.

A facilitated conversation

Starting Over

Exploring experiences and connections of returning to society — a facilitated conversation around a poem written from the point of view of someone living with a felony, followed by group discussion.

  • Hosted with Oregon HumanitiesA conversation program, offered through PA Speaker 24.
  • For community groupsLibraries, congregations, classrooms, and civic groups.

Every session includes three discussion questions asked at set points, a feedback form to take home, and a feedback survey — so organizers hear what landed, and participants keep what they learned.

Questions

Before you book.

Can PA Speaker 24 come to us, or is it virtual only?

Sessions are offered in person, virtual, or both — private or public. Tell PA Speaker 24 your setting in the booking request and the session will be shaped to fit the room, including the screen.

How long should we book?

Sessions run 60, 75, or 90 minutes. Ninety minutes is recommended: it leaves room for the three discussion questions, the feedback form, and the feedback survey without rushing the conversation. Series run four or eight sessions.

What about travel outside Portland?

For local paid engagements, PA Speaker 24 travels within the region — up to Spokane to the north, Ontario / Pendleton to the east, and Eugene / Corvallis to the south. Travel, room, and board are negotiated into the contract, and are covered when the organizer’s materials say so.

What do we need to provide?

A room and a screen are enough to start. PA Speaker 24 brings the slides, the feedback forms, and the feedback survey. If your venue has specific accessibility or setup needs, mention them in your request.
